Rio Tinto Alcan inaugurates its leading-edge AP60 aluminium smelter in Canada

MONTREAL, Jan. 16, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Rio Tinto Alcan inaugurated the US$ 1.1 billion Arvida Aluminium Smelter, AP60 Technology Centre, in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean, Quebec. The new plant has an installed capacity of 60,000-tonnes of aluminium and is the most technologically advanced aluminium smelter in the world.

Jacynthe Côté, Chief executive of Rio Tinto Alcan said: "Rio Tinto Alcan is very proud to inaugurate the new Arvida Aluminium Smelter, AP60 Technology Centre. It is an honour to share this achievement with the men and women who made it possible - our employees. Today's milestone is the result of years of work by our Research and development teams, particularly the teams that first conceived, developed and tested the AP60 technology at the Laboratoire de recherche des fabrications (LRF) in France. The innovative new AP60 technology platform will also allow for the development of a series of next generation technologies permitting further improvements in productivity, and reductions in energy and environmental footprint.
"It is also important to recognize the valued support from all our employees, customers, suppliers and stakeholders from across our host community. The new Arvida Aluminium Smelter, AP60 Technology Centre represents the next chapter in our over 100 year history as a leading aluminium producer.

About the Arvida Aluminium Smelter, AP60 Technology Centre
The Arvida Aluminium Smelter, AP60 Technology Centre will produce 40 per cent more aluminium per cell than the previous generation of AP technology. The 60,000-tonne plant employs nearly 135 people and reached full capacity in December 2013.
Rio Tinto Alcan's Arvida Research & Development Centre and R&D teams will continue supporting the new smelter and the further development of the AP60 technology platform.

How an aluminum smelter is made

In an aluminum smelter usually we find several hundred pot, housed in one or more large buildings called potrooms. Inside the potroom the cells are electrically connected in series. This means that the cathode of a cell is connected with the anode rod of the next cell downstream. The electrical connection of one cell to the next one is made with a complicated system of aluminum bars with cross sectional areas suitable to transport the so high currents used with minimum voltage drops. In the most recent smelters the cells are arranged in a side by side configuration, which makes easier to lessen the adverse effects of the magnetic fields. In older smelters it’s easy to find also the end-to-end configuration. As we have seen, a cell for its basic functioning needs alumina, carbon anodes and electrical current. There are two primary technologies using the Hall–Héroult process: Söderberg technology and prebake technology. In Söderberg or self-baking anodes using cells, there is a single anode per electrolysis cell  Aluminum smelter equipment . The anode is in a frame and as the bottom of the anode turns mainly into CO2 during the electrolysis the anode loses mass and being amorphous it slowly sinks within its frame. More material to the top of the anode is continuously added in the form of briquettes made from coke and pitch. The lost heat from the smelting operation is used to bake the briquettes into the carbon form required for reaction with alumina. This baking process in Söderberg anodes during electrolysis releases more carcinogenic PAHs and other pollutants than electrolysis with prebaked anodes and partially for this reason prebaked anodes using cells have become more common in aluminum industry. Disruption at Sohar Aluminum to last up to 6 months

Production at Oman's Sohar Aluminum could be disrupted by as much as six months, sources said Thursday, following the "interruption" of smelting operations after an "incident" reported by the company last Friday. A trader said he expects the plant to remain closed for four to six months, with at least 150,000 mt of aluminum production lost. A second source, an aluminum producer, said he had heard it could take even longer than six months to fully restore operations, despite official statements there would be no long-term impact. "Sohar Aluminum refutes any unofficial statements, remarks, claims or communication circulated on social media, networking platforms, digital or print," according to a statement posted on the company's website since Monday.
